Candlelight
Interiors lit by nothing but candles, and what that does to a face.
Watch for
- The only light sources are in shot — candles, fires, windows. Nothing arrives from off-screen.
- How fall-off works: faces bright at one edge and gone into blackness at the other.
- The flicker. Light that is never steady, so faces are never quite fixed.

Lanthimos lights the film only with sources visible in frame so that the period is experienced as a physical condition rather than reproduced as decoration.
OObservation
Interiors are lit by candles, firelight and windows, all present in shot. Faces carry strong fall-off from lit edge to blackness, and the light flickers continuously. No fill arrives from off-screen.
CConnotation
Faces half-swallowed by unsteady dark read as people whose intentions cannot be fully seen, and light that depends on a flame suggests a court where everything is provisional.
AAudience
We strain to read expressions the way the characters strain to read each other, which puts us inside the palace's paranoia rather than outside it.

- Choose one face. Describe how the light falls across it from one side to the other.
- What would be lost if this scene were lit evenly and brightly?
For teachers
The clearest low-key and motivated-lighting example in the library, and a direct companion to the lighting desk in The Shot Caller. Period court intrigue — check the wider film before recommending it.
